Odd weather

I think there must have been a small tornado around these parts in the last few days. On Tuesday morning, both of my bikes were covered in a fine layer of mud, and it took a bunch of puzzling on my part to figure out where it could possibly have come from.

I took the big bike to the car wash and endured the strange looks of the other patrons as I hosed it down. I’d rather have a clean bike than an obvious commuter bike that looks like I decided, on a lark, to take it offroading.

Could be the dust storms in Australia. I expect some fantastic sunsets in the next few months.

Can you spot the layer of “dust” on my driveway this morning?

Eastern Australia dust storm

I thought you lived in Australia, not Mars.

I very strongly suspect the winds couldn’t possibly have taken the dust up there yet.

(Just like the oil spill couldn’t possibly have reached near the Darwin coast yet — hmm, that’s been strangely silent for a while)

Fair cop.

Were they really impressive-enough to transport significant quantities of dust all the way to Japan?

I mean, I can see that, but I also think it’s somewhat unlikely.

News this morning said it was slowly moving out of Sydney (they had a nice shot of the “opera house”… it was a flat orange screen) and heading up the coast… although they did mention the possibility of the dust getting as far as New Zealand (which makes more sense than Japan, with the westerlies and all that).
